Gingivoplasty involves surgical shaping of healthy tissue with gums surrounding the tooth. None of the above procedures involves bones removal.

Application

Gingivectomy was originally intended for the treatment of periodontal disease, to be used today as a cosmetic surgical technique. The tissue right can be removed for two reasons:

Between the teeth and the gums are formed pockets in which food and bacteria accumulate, which greatly hampers the oral cavity hygiene.
There is an excess of tooth around the teeth, which hampers the tooth hygiene. In more severe cases, the excess of dental flesh causes speech and chewing difficulties.

Gingivoplasty gives the gums a natural appearance (shape). The surgical procedure corrects malformations and asymmetries caused by a genetic factor, but the procedure can have a purely cosmetic purpose. Gingivoplasty is usually done independently of gingivectomy, but can be done before or after gingivectomy.

Preparation

Immediately before any of the above interventions, the dentist advises on oral hygiene after surgery. Before the surgery, the patient’s teeth are cleansed from the lime that is in the existing pockets.

Procedure

Gingivectomy and gingivoplasty are most commonly performed with scalpels, but electro-surgical devices, lasers and / or dental diamond drills can also be used. The dentist may also use instruments specially made for the aforementioned surgical procedures.

Before starting the operation, the patient is given local anesthesia. Gingivectomy may take several minutes, depending on the amount of tissue to be removed.

After surgery

After gingivectomy and gingivoplasty, patients are placed on periodontal bandages on dental flesh, which is carried between one week to ten days. Spicy and crunchy food should be avoided during bending. The dentist in the patient, if needed, overrides a pain relief and mouthwash remedy and hyaluronic acid formulations in the form of gel that promote tissue repair.
After surgery it is very important to keep the oral cavity clean and to avoid brushing the wound in the first days after the procedure.
